These moments of reflection invite team members to step back from daily tasks and connect over shared values like courage, service, and sacrifice. Whether you participate in a Memorial Day ceremony, observe a moment of silence, or visit a local memorial together, these activities help build empathy, understanding, and a stronger sense of community.
Host a Flag-Raising Ceremony
Organizing a flag-raising ceremony is a powerful way to begin your Memorial Day observances at work. Consider assigning team roles such as speakers, flag handlers, and music coordinators to foster a sense of collaboration and shared purpose. Bear in mind that flag handlers should be familiar with the United States Flag Code and how to properly handle the flag with respect.
What should a flag raising ceremony include? Consider including a short reading, the national anthem, or a moment of silence in your Memorial Day ceremony to promote active reflection. This simple but symbolic act can set the tone for a day of unity, gratitude, and remembrance together.
Visit a Local Memorial with Your Team
Plan a group visit to a nearby memorial or military cemetery for a hands-on way to honor fallen service members. Teams can participate in activities like respectfully laying flowers or wreaths, reading brief historical facts about local heroes, or holding a quiet moment of reflection.
These outings offer your team a way to connect with the community around them while also encouraging important dialogue among colleagues. Additionally, if your community hosts events to mark the occasion, such as a Memorial Day parade, consider pairing your outing with these gatherings, or even sponsoring a local event.
Host a Guided Session on Mental Wellness
Memorial Day offers the chance to reflect not only on military service and sacrifice, but also on the emotional toll that service members can experience, and the importance of mental health.
This Memorial Day, host a team gathering that includes a conversation on well-being in the workplace. Consider bringing in a guest speaker such as a mental health professional, a veteran who advocates for mental health, or a representative from a local support organization to share insights and resources.
You can also share brief thoughtful video resources to spark dialogue. As a starting point, watch the short video above to learn some key Mental Health Do’s and Don’ts in the Workplace.
Take Part in a Moment of Silence and Reflection
A moment of silence is a respectful and inclusive way to honor the meaning of Memorial Day at work. Set aside a specific time for your team to pause together, whether in person or virtually.
Afterward, provide an opportunity for voluntary reflection. Employees may choose to share personal stories, connections to military service, or thoughts on the day’s significance. This simple practice can deepen team connections and foster a shared sense of respect and understanding, ultimately strengthening trust, improving communication, and supporting a more engaged workplace culture.
Service-Oriented Team-Building Activities
Giving back is a powerful way to honor the spirit of Memorial Day while strengthening your team’s sense of purpose. That’s because volunteering can promote key elements of effective teamwork like collaboration and shared achievement. By focusing on service, your employees can thoughtfully reflect on the holiday’s themes of sacrifice and support for others.
Volunteer at Veterans’ Organizations
Partnering with local veterans’ organizations is a direct and impactful way to give back. Your team can help by serving meals, organizing facility clean-ups, or participating in social visits with residents. These activities not only provide needed support for veterans, they also build gratitude and camaraderie among team members through a profound shared experience.

Complete Community Clean-Up and Beautification Projects
Honor Memorial Day and help others by organizing a team clean-up at a local park, community space, or war memorial. With permission from the participating organization, your team can plant flowers, restore green spaces, or help maintain monuments for generations to come.
Once you’ve determined which organization to partner with and what your project will entail, you can get started with assigning roles and gathering supplies. When the big day comes, everyone will love the satisfaction of seeing visible, positive change that they created together! This is a hands-on way to serve while building a sense of teamwork and community pride.
Create Care Packages for Troops Overseas
Assembling care packages for deployed military personnel is a thoughtful, team-friendly project with emotional impact. Choose useful and comforting items like snacks, hygiene supplies, and letters of appreciation. Then, coordinate a packing session together.
There are many nonprofit organizations that can provide guidelines and support for your project. For instance, Operation Shoebox has been in operation for over 20 years, working with communities to send more than 2 million packages to service members.
This activity allows employees to contribute directly to those who are currently serving, while strengthening team bonds through a shared, heartfelt effort.
Creative and Interactive Team-Building Activities

Whether in person or remote, creativity encourages everyone to connect with the deeper values of service, sacrifice, and unity.
Plan a Memorial Day-Themed Team Cookout
Hosting a team cookout or potluck is one of the most approachable and enjoyable Memorial Day ideas for work. Your team can plan an outdoor gathering or a shared meal in the break room, complete with red, white, and blue décor.
Add interactive elements like recipe contests for patriotic dishes, a collaborative meal prep challenge, or a themed food drive supporting military families. These casual moments allow colleagues to connect outside their usual roles, reinforcing camaraderie through shared celebration and tradition.
Create a Group Art Project
Honor Memorial Day with a creative expression of teamwork. For this idea, your team can collaborate on an art project like a memorial mural, a symbolic flag display, or a shared remembrance collage.
These projects allow everyone to contribute their own perspectives while working toward a unified result that showcases everyone’s talents. Organize materials ahead of time and designate a facilitator to encourage creativity and reflection.
Whether your team decides to display the final piece in your office, auction it off for a worthy cause, or circulate it virtually, group art can serve as a lasting symbol of your team’s shared values.
Online Group Volunteering
These days, remote teams can still give back and complete rewarding volunteer projects through digital outlets.
For instance, you can work with a nonprofit to organize a letter-writing campaign for deployed troops or veterans. Another idea: work virtually with your team to create and ship care kits for local military families. Or, you can launch a virtual fundraiser for a veterans’ charity to purchase supplies or fund programs for veterans.
With a little coordination and creativity, these remote volunteer activities can strengthen team bonds while making a tangible impact.
Remote Patriotic Trivia and Games
Make your remembrance day interactive and educational with a remote trivia session centered on American history, national parks, or military facts. Framing the experience around these themes helps employees connect more deeply with the purpose of the day while keeping participation approachable and engaging.
Use virtual quiz tools like Kahoot! or QuizBreaker to encourage real-time interaction, friendly competition, and team collaboration. Trivia not only energizes remote teams, it also reinforces shared knowledge, sparks conversation, and creates a memorable experience that can strengthen overall engagement.

The History of Memorial Day
What is Memorial Day?
Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is a U.S. federal holiday dedicated to honoring military personnel who died in service to their country. Its roots trace back to the aftermath of the Civil War, a conflict that claimed more American lives than any other.
When did Memorial Day begin?
One of the earliest recorded Memorial Day-style celebrations took place in 1865 in Charleston, South Carolina. There, a crowd of nearly 10,000 people – most of them African American people who had been freed from enslavement – gathered at the Washington Race Course and Jockey Club, a former makeshift Confederate prison for Union captives during the war. The group honored the fallen with a solemn procession, Bible readings, songs, floral tributes, and graveside ceremonies.
The first nationally organized Memorial Day was held on May 30, 1868, following a proclamation by General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, a Union veterans’ organization. That year, thousands gathered at Arlington National Cemetery to decorate the graves of more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers.
Over time, the holiday has expanded to honor American military personnel who died in all wars, not just the Civil War. In particular, after World War I, the day became more broadly recognized across the country.
Despite the events described above, the official “birthplace” of Memorial Day is recognized as Waterloo, New York. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, “A congressional resolution in 1966 officially recognized a century of Memorial Day events held on May 30 in Waterloo, NY, officially proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Thus the federal government declared this location as the ‘birthplace’ of Memorial Day.”
When did Memorial Day become a national holiday?
In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a federal holiday by Congress and set to be observed on the last Monday in May, creating the three-day weekend we know today.
While it’s often considered the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day’s true meaning endures: a day to honor the ultimate sacrifice of those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
