Frequently Asked Questions About Hispanic Heritage Month

What Is Hispanic Heritage Month

What is Hispanic Heritage Month?

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to reflect on the importance of Hispanic and Latinx culture. Additionally, it’s a time to celebrate and grow together while supporting our Hispanic friends and colleagues.

Hispanic Heritage Week began in 1968 in the United States, when President Lyndon Johnson signed Hispanic Heritage Week into law. Then, in 1988, the celebration expanded into a month when President Ronald Reagan signed National Hispanic Heritage Month into law.

Specifically, Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15. That’s because September 15 is independence day for five Latin American countries. In 1821, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua declared their independence.

Now, we celebrate the month-long holiday of Hispanic culture, from September 15 through October 15. During this time, you can enjoy festivals, dances, concerts, parades, and more.

When is Hispanic Heritage Month?

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated each year from September 15 through October 15.

How can I honor Hispanic Heritage Month at work?

There are plenty of ways to respectfully celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at work! For instance, you can share knowledge about Hispanic culture and history with your team through trivia challenges or educational YouTube videos. Additionally, you can volunteer with a nonprofit that serves Hispanic communities or causes.

Another great idea to consider: host a virtual potluck! During this activity, each of your team members can prepare a different dish from a Spanish-speaking country. Then, show off what you made during a video call.

What is the difference between Hispanic and Latinx?

The short answer is: it’s nuanced! Britannica shares some guidance on the topic.

In general, “‘Latino’ is understood as shorthand for the Spanish word latinoamericano...and refers to (almost) anyone born in or with ancestors from Latin America and living in the U.S.”

On the other hand, “‘Hispanic’ is generally accepted as a narrower term that includes people only from Spanish-speaking Latin America, including those countries/territories of the Caribbean or from Spain itself.”

However, Britannica notes that these categorizations are imperfect. That’s because our unique family histories mean that many people consider themselves to be a part of multiple groups. Additionally, some people may prefer to identify more specifically with their country of origin.
