Why celebrate DEI holidays?

There are many reasons to celebrate and honor DEI holidays. First, taking time to commemorate these occasions can help create an affirming, welcoming, and inclusive environment for employees of all backgrounds.

Additionally, honoring DEI holidays is a chance to learn and bond with your team. Depending on the activities you choose, you can boost morale and trust, enhance company culture, and empower employees to bring their authentic selves to work. You’ll also expand your team’s knowledge, which can lead to enhanced cultural competencies and emotional intelligence.

As a result, you may see an increase in employee engagement and smoother communication between your teams. Encouraging a diverse and inclusive workplace is also a great way to boost retention and help with recruiting new team members. In fact, some studies have shown that DEI efforts and social responsibility are key when it comes to employee satisfaction.

How can I make sure our team celebrates diversity related holidays respectfully?

There are a variety of ways to celebrate and honor DEI holidays respectfully. By taking a few steps to educate yourself and prepare, your whole team can learn more, build connections, start a meaningful dialogue, and have fun together when appropriate.

Remember, some holidays are celebratory, while others are somber and should be treated with reverence. The best way to ensure you are celebrating respectfully is to do some research ahead of time on the origins, meaning, and traditions behind the holiday you’re honoring. Consider watching YouTube videos from reputable sources, reading articles from prominent publications or journals, and following diverse creators on social media to see what they have shared about the holiday.

Based on your research, select activities that are appropriate for the occasion your team is honoring. When in doubt, it’s a good idea to include your HR department or even an external consultant who can help guide your plans. Additionally, you can, learn by example! Sometimes, a quick Google search for “[holiday] what to avoid” or “[holiday] do’s and don’ts” can turn up helpful guidance on respectful celebrations.

What are some ideas to honor DEI holidays at work?

  • Review your diversity team building calendar together and brainstorm ideas as a team.
  • Watch an educational or historical documentary with your team.
  • Start a book club to dig deeper into a topic. Make it easier with audiobooks, or even a podcast club!
  • Plan a team volunteer day to support a cause related to the holiday.
  • Cook or bake a dish together while learning about another culture or holiday.
  • Examine equity practices at your own company and discuss ways your team can be more inclusive and equitable.
  • Host a Lunch & Learn and hire an expert guest speaker or facilitator.
  • Book a memorable virtual experience with Unexpected Virtual Tours and Training.

This session incorporates the 2024 Black History Month theme of “African Americans and the Arts” while also exploring important historic sites through virtual visits to sites in Montgomery, Alabama. Learn the story of leaders like John Lewis, Elizabeth Key Grinstead, Barbara Johns, and many others. This session also includes interactive team trivia as well as a resource page with key event takeaways.

In June, honor Juneteenth with Unexpected Virtual Tours and Training during this educational virtual session. This experience was featured by “Lonely Planet” as one of the best ways to honor Juneteenth!

During this session, your team will learn the history and important traditions behind this important holiday, often referred to as “Emancipation Day.” Additionally, this experience includes two engaging live-streaming visits to meaningful historic sites.

First, join our virtual guide in Hampton, Virginia. This is the home of Point Comfort, the location where the first enslaved Africans landed in 1619. Then, virtually see the Texas African American History Monument in Austin, Texas. These locations hold incredible history, which our guides will share with your team, and also serve as lasting reminders of the ongoing fight toward equity.

Historically, Juneteenth is celebrated with red foods, including barbecue, watermelon, and red drinks. During the event, our guides specifically address how these historic celebration foods were warped into negative stereotypes. In the optional add-on Treat Boxes for this session, incredible Black-owned small businesses reclaim these red foods and drinks to honor Emancipation Day and their ancestors.

While his term was short, his impact endures. Despite once forced to accept an “other than honorable” discharge from the U.S. Navy after being asked about his sexuality, Milk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

Additionally during this session, you’ll take a live-streamed virtual field trip to the Stonewall National Monument. Delve into the history and origins behind the modern Pride movement and explore how Pride originally began as a protest.
