Why celebrate DEI holidays?

There are many reasons to celebrate and honor DEI holidays. First, taking time to commemorate these occasions can help create an affirming, welcoming, and inclusive environment for employees of all backgrounds.

Additionally, honoring DEI holidays is a chance to learn and bond with your team. Depending on the activities you choose, you can boost morale and trust, enhance company culture, and empower employees to bring their authentic selves to work. You’ll also expand your team’s knowledge, which can lead to enhanced cultural competencies and emotional intelligence.

As a result, you may see an increase in employee engagement and smoother communication between your teams. Encouraging a diverse and inclusive workplace is also a great way to boost retention and help with recruiting new team members. In fact, some studies have shown that DEI efforts and social responsibility are key when it comes to employee satisfaction.

How can I make sure our team celebrates diversity related holidays respectfully?

There are a variety of ways to celebrate and honor DEI holidays respectfully. Learn more, build connections, start a meaningful dialogue, and have fun with your team when appropriate.

Remember, some holidays are celebratory, while others are somber and should be treated with reverence. Be sure to select activities that are appropriate for the occasion your team is honoring. When in doubt, it’s a good idea to include your HR department or even an external consultant who can help guide your plans.

Unexpected Virtual Tours’ sessions include:

Black History Month

Honor Black History Month by learning about the roots of Black history itself. In the early 1900s, white historians said African Americans “had no history.” Dr. Carter Woodson proved them wrong. This experience shares his incredible story.

Additionally, your team will see live-streamed visits to important historic Black neighborhoods, learn about the Civil Rights movement, and celebrate African American history.

Women’s History Month

Available for a limited time during Women’s History Month in March! The “She Innovates” virtual experience shares the story of female inventors and innovators from the 1800s and 1900s.

Interact with character actors, take a virtual field trip, play fun games, and immerse yourself in the triumph of female ingenuity.

AAPI Heritage Month

Honor Asian American and Pacific Islander history during the month of May with a meaningful virtual experience. This session – brand new for 2023 – shares the history of Asian Americans from the 1800s to the present day, including leaders like Fred Korematsu and Bhagat Singh Thind.

Take a virtual field trip to San Francisco’s Chinatown, learn how Asian Americans have impacted every aspect of American life, and connect with your team.

Juneteenth

In June, honor Juneteenth with Unexpected Virtual Tours during this educational virtual session. Featured by “Lonely Planet” as one of the best ways to honor Juneteenth!

Learn the history of this important holiday, often referred to as “Emancipation Day.” Optional add-on treat boxes include products from 100% Black-owned small businesses!

Pride Month

Also in June, celebrate LGBTQIA+ Pride Month with our virtual Pride experience. Hear the story of America’s first gay marriage in 1807 as well as learning about the bravery of a transgender Civil War soldier. Your team will also get a look at America’s first gay neighborhood of Greenwich Village in New York City. Then, see important sites related to Harvey Milk in San Francisco.

Additionally, take a live-streamed virtual field trip to the Stonewall National Monument. Finally, as an optional add-on, your team can enjoy treat boxes featuring products from LGBTQ+ owned businesses and allies.

Hispanic Heritage Month
